it interests me that on tumblr and in instant messaging, the ‘conversational’ way to type is sans capitalization. designer Herbert Bayer of Bauhaus fame designed typefaces that went against the previously widely-held standards in that they were sans-serif, constructed with rounded shapes and with diagonals eliminated as much as possible so they could be mass-produced more easily.
"The most radical aspect of Bayer’s alphabets, however, lay not in their geometric system but in their obliteration of capital letters. Bayer argued that the uppercase/lowercase distinction had no phonetic purpose and thus violated the functional premise of the Latin alphabet: to translate sound into graphic marks."
